Smiling Graduate Holding up DiplomaMissouri Southern State University will conduct its 60th Commencement in ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and noon on Saturday, May 11 at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on the MSSU campus.

The 9:30 a.m. ceremony will include graduates from the School of Arts & Sciences and School of Health Sciences, Public Safety and Technology.

The noon ceremony will include graduates from the Robert W. Plaster School of Business and the School of Education

A total of 615 May and July graduates will receive 713 degrees.

Master’s degrees will be conferred at both ceremonies.

The speaker for the 60th Commencement will be Joplin Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean. Mayor Colbert-Kean is president of Prayerful Portions, LLC, a small business consulting firm. She and her husband, William Kean, Jr., assist small businesses with income growth strategies and sustainable operations.

As an elected official since April 2006, Mayor Colbert-Kean is committed to community and civic services. She has been instrumental in ensuring Joplin is represented on the federal level by being an active board member of the National League of Cities, an organization which advocates and promotes cities agendas to White House Administration and congressional representatives.

Mayor Colbert-Kean serves on the Missouri Municipal Leagues Economic Development & Human Resources Board and is also a Governor’s Appointee to the Missouri Women’s Council, which assists women interested in starting a business, as well as being a resource for those already running a business.

She also serves the educational sector by being on the Missouri Southern State University Robert W. Plaster School of Business Advisory Board, helping to develop policy and program initiatives to grow the business school. As vice president of Joplin Metro Credit Union Board, a member of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Board, the NAACP Joplin Branch, the Discover Downtown Alliance and vice president of the Joplin Emancipation Committee, she remains focused on growing the economic environment and developing the cultural and arts entertainment offerings in Joplin.

A graduate of Missouri Southern State University with a Marketing Degree, Mayor Colbert-Kean’s career experience includes managerial and business development, negotiations, retail management, budgeting, customer service, leadership and motivational speaking.

A lifelong Joplin resident, she and her husband have two daughters in college, a son in the Marine Corps, and a daughter in first grade.
