During the Missouri Dental Hygienist Association (MDHA) Lobby Day in the Capitol Rotunda, Senator Ron Richard (R) presented a special proclamation from the Missouri Senate to Dr. Tia Strait, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, Public Safety and Technology.
The proclamation recognized Dr. Strait as a heroine for her work following the catastrophic Joplin tornado on May 22, 2011.
Recognizing the immediate need for emergency responders, Strait opened up an emergency medical clinic at MSSU in the Health Sciences building, which was in operation within three hours after the tornado hit.
Dr. Strait, along with several of her department chairs and faculty helped lead the efforts and were on site as the Health Sciences Building was transformed into a temporary hospital after St. John’s Hospital was closed and Freeman and other local hospitals were stressed by the influx of the injured from the tornado.
During that time Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at Missouri Southern served as the primary Red Cross Shelter for those displaced by the tornado.
