General William Westmorland, commander of American forces in the early part of the Vietnam War, addressed students during a campus visit to Missouri southern on May 2, 1980.  Gen. Westmorland’s appearance was an example of the prestigious personages occasionally brough on campus by the then College Union Board to broaden the students’ cultural and intellectural horizons.

In the the afternoon, the retired general joined Kappa Alpha fraternity members in their then annual mock storming of the Carthage courthouse.
