The Missouri Southern State University Mock Trial Team competed in the 4th Annual Bearcat Invitational tournament Oct. 4-5 at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

The students are litigating a criminal case this year, State of Midlands v. Whit Bowman. The facts of the case are as follows:

On August 30, 2012, a robbery occurred at Racheter World Amusement Park in Midlands.  Following the robbery, a chase ensued, and former police officer and current security guard Winston Thomas was injured.  The robber Thomas chased escaped through the park and remains at large, his whereabouts unknown.

Police, however, arrested Whit Bowman, a park employee whom they believe took part in the commission of the crime.

The students compete in teams of 6-10 serving in roles as both attorneys and witnesses.  Scores are assigned based upon their knowledge of the facts, presentation of the case and following courtroom procedure and rules of evidence.

Winning the “Top Attorney” award was Laurna Alumbaugh, sophomore MSSU Political Science major from Duenweg.

MSSU is scheduled to compete in their next tournament at Collin College in the Dallas, Tex. area for the North Texas/DFW Mock Trial Invitational Oct 25-27.
