The Literary Lions book club has selected “Bliss” as its selection for the fall semester.
The novel is by O.Z. Livaneli, one of Turkey’s most prominent and popular authors. It tells the story of Meryem, a young girl sentenced to death because she is believed to have dishonored her family; Cemal, a soldier who returns from fighting to find that he’s been given the task of killing his cousin, Meryem; and Professor Irfan, a well-known intellectual in the midst of an existential crisis. The three are brought together by fate and embark on a turbulent journey to the depths of themselves, of each other and of the soul of the country.
Liveneli will visit Missouri Southern in January to discuss his international bestseller.
Wendy McGrane, director of Spiva Library, will serve as moderator for the book discussions, which will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the University Java coffee shop. Another group discussion is set for Oct. 23, and a viewing of the film on Nov. 6.
A dinner with the author will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Ralph L. Gray Alumni Center.
Cost is $25, or $15 if you are a member of the Friends of George A. Spiva Library. To participate, contact the alumni office (ext. 9355) by Sept. 26.
