Joplin, MO (SNS) – A series of film to usher in Valentine’s Day will be offered at Missouri Southern State University next week.
Additional events scheduled include a visit by an unusual sketch artist, business workshops and the first home game at Missouri Southern’s new baseball stadium.
MONDAY, Feb. 9
“The Wedding Singer”: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Phelps Theatre in Billingsly Student Center. The 1998 film follows a wedding singer who falls in love with a waitress. Presented by the Campus Activities Board, admission is free; snacks will be provided.
TUESDAY, Feb. 10
Microsoft Word Level 1: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Plaster Hall. Participants will learn how to use the basic features of Microsoft Word. The training incorporates a hands-on approach to learning. Each participant will receive a manual and completion certificate. The cost is $119. The training will continue at the same time on Thursday. Details: 417-625-3128.
“P.S. I Love You”: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. The 2007 film depicts a woman overcoming the loss of her husband through a series of letters he wrote for her. Presented by CAB, admission is free; snacks will be provided.
WEDNESDAY, Feb. 11
The Original Butt Sketch: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Billingsly Student Center. Krandel Lee Newton, an engineer-turned artist, developed the unique concept in Dallas’ Historic West End in 1987. The sketches became a big hit and Newton and his artists have made appearances at colleges, trade shows, conventions, parties and private receptions. To date, more than 250,000 people have gotten their backsides drawn. Presented by CAB.
Wellness Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center. Students are invited to make cards for Valentine’s Day.
“The Proposal”: 6:30 to 8:10 p.m., Phelps Theatre. The 2009 film centers around a man and his boss who agree to get married in order to attain a promotion and avoid deportation to Canada, respectively. Presented by CAB, admission is free; snacks will be provided.
THURSDAY, Feb. 12
Health Hut: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center. The Wellness Department will offer free giveaways during the weekly event.
Career Services Walk-In Workshop: 12 to 3 p.m., Career Services office, second floor of Spiva Library. Stop by the workshop for career and resume advice, assistance creating or editing your resume, assistance researching careers, information on job shadowing and internships. All services and printing are available free of charge; no appointment is needed.
“Big Hero 6”: 2:30 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m., Phelps Theatre. The 2014 animated Disney feature follows a young boy with a robot who work to combat a technological threat. Presented by the Wellness Program, admission is free; snacks will be provided.
FRIDAY, Feb. 13
“Starting a Small Business – The First Small Steps”: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Plaster Hall. Participants attending this seminar will have an opportunity to assess their business idea, learn about the importance of planning, discuss legal and regulatory requirements, learn about marketing strategies and identify sources of financing. “Valentine’s Day”: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. The 2010 film follows a multitude of characters who have very different Valentine’s Day experiences. Presented by CAB, admission is free; snacks will be provided.
SATURDAY, Feb. 14
Baseball: 1 p.m. Support the Lions as they open their season against Upper Iowa University in Missouri Southern’s new baseball stadium.
Women’s Basketball vs. Missouri Western State: 1 p.m., Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. During the annual Pink Night, Lions will wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
Men’s Basketball vs. Missouri Western State: 3 p.m., Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
SUNDAY, Feb. 15
Baseball: 12 p.m., new baseball stadium. The Lions will take on Upper Iowa University.
