Southern Theatre will present “Don’t Cut to the Chase” – the fourth original one-act play festival at Missouri Southern State University – at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, through Saturday, May 2, in the Bud Walton Theatre.
The Directing II students spent the first half of the semester writing a 30-minute one-act play. The second half of the semester has been dedicated to the direction of those plays.
In the past, the playwrights also filled the role of director. This year, the playwrights were paired and will be directing their partner’s play instead of their own. Now each student will have the experience of seeing his or her written work envisioned by another director while working with a playwright on an original script. Some plays are comedic and some are tragic and all are fresh.
The plays will be presented in repertory style over six nights. The first set of plays, to be performed on April 27 and 30, will be “Ghost Searchers,” “An Adult Show,” “Homecoming” and “Pressure.” The second set, on April 28 and May 1, will be “Cuckoo,” “The Basement Dwellers” and “Sundowning.” The final set of plays, performed April 29 and May 2, will be “3x the Charm,” “Bless Me,” “Connubial Bliss” and “Quilt.”
There is no admission charge. Tickets will be available at the door from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each evening. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.
