Joplin, MO (SNS) – In addition to spring commencement planned for Saturday, May 9, several individual departments will offer traditional ceremonies for their graduates this week at Missouri Southern State University.

A graduation ceremony for students in the Law Enforcement Academy will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7, in the auditorium of the Mills-Anderson Justice Center.

Nearly 40 students will receive their certificates and be sworn in during the ceremony. The graduation speaker will be Chief Greg Dagnan, from the Carthage Police Department.

A traditional pinning ceremony for nursing students will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, in Taylor Performing Arts Center.

An anticipated 39 students will take part in the ceremony – including those receiving their BSN and others on the RN to BSN track. In addition to the pinning, there will be a candle-lighting ceremony and the recitation of the Nightingale pledge.

A pinning ceremony for students graduating from the Dental Hygiene program will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

Following opening remarks by Dr. Tia Strait, dean of the School of Health Sciences, there will be recognition of retiring faculty, the pinning of graduates and the dental hygiene oath. Faculty members will then present several special awards to members of the Class of 2015.

Spring commencement ceremonies for the more than 600 students being awarded degrees will be held Saturday, May 9, in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The commencement ceremony for students from the School of Business, School of Education and those receiving a general studies degree will be held at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony for the School of Arts and Sciences and School of Health Sciences will be at noon.

Jeff Kilbane, president of JMK Sculpture Inc. in Los Angeles, Calif., will serve as commencement speaker.
