JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – A team of respiratory care students from Missouri Southern State University has taken home top honors in the annual Missouri Society for Respiratory Care “Sputum Bowl.”
The competition was held at the Missouri Society for Respiratory Care State Conference, held April 22-24 in Osage Beach, Mo.
The team of Kayla Smith, Sugar Creek; Kelsey Reading, Joplin; and Megan Perry and Jamie McCracken, Webb City, won the competition. They will represent the Missouri Society for Respiratory Care at the American Association for Respiratory Care International Congress Nov. 7-10 in Tampa, Fla.
There were 15 teams that competed from respiratory programs across the state of Missouri. The Sputum Bowl is an academic bowl that includes such categories as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, airway management, mechanical ventilation, oxygen devices, pharmacology, pulmonary function studies and neonatal/pediatrics.
MSSU had three student teams entered in the event. The university’s team also came in first at the state conference in 2014.
