Joplin, MO (SNS) – More than two dozen students will showcase their work beyond the classroom during the 2016 Missouri Southern Student Research Fair, to be held Thursday, April 28, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom.
The fair will begin with public viewing of entries at 9 a.m. and a welcome for participants at 10 a.m. Judging will then begin, with an awards ceremony set for 12:50 p.m.
Entries were open to students in each of the four schools – Arts & Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences. Qualitative entries could consist of case studies, business plans, literature reviews, stories, artwork, etc.; quantitative entries could include technology or science projects, theory developed using mathematical tools, or even surveys or data analyzed using statistical techniques.
Research topics submitted for the fair range from “The Psychosocial Impact of Dissection Room Experience on Undergraduate Students,” to “Do Lower Oil Prices Lead to Lower U.S. Domestic Oil Production?” and “The Effects of Positive and Negative Media on Racial Attitudes.”
Taelur Tatum, a senior education major whose project is entitled “Similarities Amongst Former Foster Children Currently Enrolled at MSSU,” said she is excited to take part in the event.
“After seeing how much it affects students at Missouri Southern, I think this is a really important topic,” Tatum said. “I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s projects because we’re all doing this because we enjoy research – the topics are things we care about.”
“Student research provides an outlet for creativity that also develops tools for discovery to support intellectual curiosity,” said Dr. Paula Carson, provost/vice president for academic affairs. “Involvement in research is an increasingly important signal that graduate program recruiters look at to determine if an applicant can succeed if admitted.”
A team of judges – from the university and community – will select first- and second-place awards for both the qualitative and quantitative tracks. Winners will receive a Missouri Southern Bookstore gift certificate in the amount of $200 for first place and $100 for second.
