Joplin, MO (SNS) – Missouri Southern State University Police responded quickly last night after receiving a report of possible gunshots at the intersection of Julie Hughes Drive and International Avenue near the university’s residence halls.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, the University Police Department (UPD) received the call alerting them to the incident, responded immediately to the scene and contacted the Joplin Police Department (JPD) for additional assistance. Preexisting protocols were rapidly employed by the UPD and JPD to ensure the safety of MSSU students and staff.
Surveillance video confirmed that shots had been fired into the air from a clearly identified vehicle, which had been rapidly driven onto campus from a nearby apartment complex. The vehicle then immediately left the premises at a high rate of speed.
“We are thankful no one was hurt during this troubling incident,” said Missouri Southern State University President Alan Marble. “However, we are proud and grateful for the response from our University Police Department, the Joplin Police Department, as well as the protocols they have in place to protect our most valuable assets – our students, faculty and staff.”
The incident is under investigation by both the UPD and JPD.
