Edmond, Okla. — Calem Nutting had a bases-clearing triple in the ninth and Matt Miller drove home the game-winning run as the Missouri Southern baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to come-from-behind to defeat 40th-ranked Lubbock Christian today in Edmond.
A day after falling victim to their own ninth-inning rally, the Lions (2-1) returned the favor, rallying in the ninth to record the victory.
Nutting had one at-bat, but it was huge as he knocked in a three-RBI triple in the ninth. Freddie Landers went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. He added a home run, as well. Davin Gummere picked up his second home run of the weekend, going 1-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Dexter Swims went 2-for-5 with two runs and a double, while Denver Coffee added an RBI double of his own. Dan Lenz scored a run, while Mike Million drove in a run of his own, as well.
Cole Gacke started for the Lions and went four and a third, striking out seven and walking just one. Will Bausinger threw the final four and two thirds, allowing just one run and striking out five to pick up the win and move his record to 1-0 on the season.
LCU (2-1) got three hits each from Andrew Pratt and Braeden Hayward.
The Lions got on board first with an RBI single from Million in the first. LCU went up 3-1 with three runs in the second, before the Lions got within one in the third with an RBI single from Landers.
LCU then scored four runs over the fourth and fifth innings to go up 7-2 after five. Gummere homered in the sixth to cut the lead to four (7-3) and after LCU answered with a homer of their own in the seventh, Landers homered in the bottom of the seventh to keep the deficit at four (8-4).
The Lions scored five in the ninth and started with a triple from Nutting, scoring Landers, Swims and Lenz. With Nutting on third, Gummere walked and Richard Fullerton was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Coffee then walked to force in the tying run and Miller drove in the game-winning run with a single to score Gummere.
