Joplin, MO (SNS) – The 14th annual Welcome Week Picnic will kickstart the first day of school with a break from classes. The annual event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, August 17, on the Oval.
The picnic will include free food, music and fun activities such as a mechanical surfboard, rock wall and a spin art Frisbee. Free T-shirts will also be available.
Other events scheduled next week include an ice cream social, Campus Involvement Day, Survivor Night and more.
Reminder: Additional Welcome Week activities will be offered over the weekend. The First-Year Convocation ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Taylor Performing Arts Center. It will be followed by Campus Craze from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Oval.
MONDAY, AUGUST 17
“Pero, Esto es Arte?”: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Spiva Art Gallery. The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 9, features works by students who recently visited Spain.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 18
President’s Ice Cream Social: 10:30 a.m. (while supplies last), in the Lion’s Den. Dr. Alan Marble and members of the Presidents Council will dish up ice-cream sundaes.
Water Warz: 6 to 9 p.m., outside of the Student Life Center. The event will feature Drench Dodgeball, Capital Mega Twister, a two-story inflatable water slide and a run and splash landing.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19
Community Day: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on the Oval. Students will be able to visit with area businesses and non-profits to sample products and explore job and volunteer opportunities.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20
Campus Involvement Day: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on the Oval. Students can get information and register for organizations on campus.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 21
Survivor Night: 7 to 10p.m., Tilt Studio, Northpark Mall. Students can play free arcade games, laser tag and miniature golf. A shuttle will run back and forth between McCormick Hall and Tilt beginning at 6:45 p.m. and will run throughout the length of the event.
