St. Charles, Mo. — An ninth-inning RBI double from Thomas Wilson scored Tee Helsel and the baseball Lions took game three of the series against Lindenwood today, 8-7 in St. Charles.
Southern (5-2, 1-2 MIAA) Broke the game open in the fourth inning when they scored five runs. With Lindenwood (2-5, 2-1 MIAA) leading 3-2, Mitchell Osburn walked and Helsel singled behind him, putting runners at first and second. Wilson then scored Osburn with an RBI single and Michael McCoy plated Helsel with a single of his own.Dallas Burke walked to load the bases and Sam Ryan knocked two home with a double. Nick Doughty added an RBI ground out, scoring Burke for the fifth run of the inning.
Lindenwood would not go away, however, as they scored two runs in the sixth and a run each in the seventh and eighth to tie the game at seven.
In Southern’s half of the ninth, Helsel reached on an error with an out to start the inning. Wilson then followed that up with the go-ahead RBI double on what proved to be the game-winner.
Wilson finished the game going 3-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Ryan was 2-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Osburn and Helsel both had two hits and two runs scored. McCoy and Osburn drove in a run each.
Ryan Bates started for the Lions and went six and a third innings, allowing five earned runs. He struck out four and walked just two to earn the no-decision. Bo Bergenpitched two thirds of an inning, striking out two to earn his first win of the season.Drew Noble threw a scoreless ninth to pick up save No. 1 of the season.
The Lions will be back in action this Friday when they play host to Nebraska-Kearney at 2 pm from Joe Becker Stadium. The game will be carried live on the radio via 1450 AM The Score.
