Earlier this year, residents of Joplin and local communities found the story of the Moore, Okla. tornado all too similar to what they had experienced two years earlier.  On May 20 of this year, Moore was hit by an  EF5 tornado with winds peaking at over 200 mph.  Over 20 people died and 377 were injured.

Since that time, a number of efforts have been extended from the people of the Joplin area to those in the Oklahoma community.

On Thursday, Sept. 5 in Joplin, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) at MSSU will sponsor a Moore Benefit Postgame Spectacular following the football contest between Missouri Southern and the University of Central Oklahoma, which is located just half an hour north of Moore, Okla.

A portion of the proceeds from tickets will be donated to the Red Cross for Moore tornado recovery.

Ticket prices for the game are $15 for adults and $10 for ages 5-14. Two dollars from each single-game ticket sold will go directly to the Red Cross. Fans can purchase tickets by going online at mssulions.com, or by calling the MSSU ticket office at (417) 625-9366. Tickets will also be sold the day of the game at the front gate and kickoff is slated for 6 pm.

Prior to the game, the first 2,400 students and fans 13 and under will receive free glow sticks. Before kickoff, fans will observe a moment of silence for the victims of the tornado.  Firefighters, police officers and Red Cross groups in attendance will be recognized at the game.

The evening will be capped with a 15-minute laser light show and fireworks display.  Five different laser systems will be present, including two from above, two from the side and one to create graphics on a 36 foot wide screen.

The show will be “family-friendly” and will begin approximately 10 minutes following the conclusion of the football game. Laser Rentals Inc., the laser company conducting the Sept. 5 postgame presentation, also conducted the postgame laser show for the first home game at Kansas City’s newly-renovated Arrowhead Stadium.

The fireworks for the show are being donated by Jake’s Fireworks.
