Dr. Floyd E. Belk served as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1974 to 1990.  Dr. Belk worked to maintain the college’s tradition of having a strong academic program and was particularly active in retaining and improving core curriculum.

In 1990, he was one of three individuals honored nationally by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities for lifetime contributions to academic programs.  In that same year, Dr. Belk, a Joplin Junior College graduate, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

After serving on the staff of the Joplin public schools for 14 years, he completed his doctorate in education at Oklahoma State University in 1966 and began his 24-year career at Missouri Southern. He retired in 1990.
