This November will mark the sixth year that Missouri Southern State University will join universities worldwide in celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week/USA (Nov. 18 – 24, 2013). This is an initiative to inspire young people around the world to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity (http://www.unleashingideas.org/) (www.gewusa.org).
Five workshops are being offered at no cost to area residents.
These events are being sponsored by the MSSU Small Business & Technology Development Center, the MSSU Center for Entrepreneurship and the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.
Aspiring Student Entrepreneurs: The First Steps
Individuals who are thinking of starting their own company will want to attend this workshop. An overview of the critical first steps associated with starting a business will be covered during this program. Participants will have an opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses, learn about the importance of planning, discuss legal and regulatory requirements, examine target markets and marketing issues, and identify sources of financing. Making Better Business Decisions Using Your Financial Statements
This workshop is designed for business owners, managers, students, and those who want to learn how to turn financial statements into useful management tools. They will learn how to capture information from the Income Statement and Balance Sheet, calculate several useful Ratios and learn to make business decisions from this information. Tax Planning: Getting the Most Out of Every Dollar
Find out the information you need to reduce your self-employment and income taxes. Tax savings strategies discussed will include: hiring your minor children, renting property from a spouse, providing tax deductible health insurance for you and your family, contribution to a retirement plan, incorporating your businesses, and other opportunities for a tax reduction. How to Write a Successful Business Plan
This workshop is designed for students, business owners, and entrepreneurs who need to know how to create a business plan for their organization so the plan can be a useful management tool. Participants will learn the importance of business plans, the key required elements of a basic plan and data that must be included. Tips will be given on writing style to make the business plan easier to understand and more professional in appearance. Participants will leave this session with a greater understanding of what their business plan should look like and how to get started writing one. Instructor: Karen Bradshaw
