The Missouri Southern Staff Senate held its monthly meeting on Nov. 12.
Staff Senator Chris Owens informed Senators that the final three Southern Service Champs have been chosen for the year.  They are Reed Kneeland, Criminal Justice custodian; Brenda McDaniel, Academic Affairs; and Stephanie Workman, Registrar’s Office.  Congratulations to these three outstanding employees!
Patty Holder, Staff Senate secretary, announced that the Angel Gift Wish tree is set up on the second floor of Hearnes Hall near the President’s Office. A campus-wide message will go out concerning this holiday effort. Employees may make a difference in a child’s life this holiday season by visiting the tree.
Student Senate liaison Tyler Hodges reported that a Shirt Swap is underway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12-13 in the Lion’s Den. Students and employees may bring one shirt in and swap it for a specially-printed MSSU shirt (until the shirts run out). The shirts brought in will be donated to the Soul’s Harbor Mission in Joplin.
Senate members also discussed volunteer opportunities on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 19) and the importance of giving back to the community with volunteer activities following the morning MLK, Jr. breakfast.  Senators agreed that volunteering in groups would be a positive experience for employees and for the University.

Senators also discussed MSSU’s present policy concerning tuition discounts for employees and family members and whether the discounts could be extended to a broader range of family members. Staff Senators decided to scrutinize the current policy prior to making recommendations  or revisiting the issue.

Senators also read a memo submitted by an employee regarding the secretarial position name and salaries. An ad hoc compensation committee is being established to research the issue.
