During its meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Missouri Southern Staff Senate received information from Nancy Good, a member of the Foundation Board, regarding parliamentary procedure in a pre-meeting learning session.

Items covered included appropriate methods for conducting business, clarification of the difference between bylaws and policies and adherence to “Robert’s Rules of Order.”

At the regular meeting, the following reports and actions were taken:

  • Heather Arnold, chair of the Diversity Committee, said MLK Day and volunteering for the day were successful. She read part of a letter from a representative of Crosslines expressing gratitude for volunteer assistance. Arnold said the planning committee membership for the 2016 MLK Day will be opened to the community.
  • Wendy McGrane, liaison from the Faculty Senate, distributed a copy of a Faculty Welfare Committee Proposal defining the nature of domestic partnerships. The proposal was recently approved by the Faculty Senate. McGrane also encouraged Senators and employees to attend the presentations by finalists for the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost position.
  • The Senate reviewed and approved a recently-revised version of the policy on tuition discounts/fee waivers. Changes were approved by the Staff Senate. The policy will be presented to the President’s Council next month for approval. Copies of the current policy are available in the human resources office and the employee handbook.
  • Although the Student Senate liaison was not in attendance, Heather Arnold reviewed recent discussions by that group including the continuation of a T-shirt drive, focus on a tobacco-free campus and the St. Baldrick’s event to help fight cancer, which will be held after spring break this year. She encouraged Staff Senators and all other employees to take part.

Staff Senate meetings are held monthly and are open to all employees. The next meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the BSC Boardroom.
