Joplin, MO (SNS) – A performance by magician Joel Ward and a presentation by the founder of the Innovative Concept Academy in St. Louis are among the events planned next week at Missouri Southern State University.

Other activities include basketball games and a weekend softball tournament, as well as a free screening of the movie “Hairspray.”


Microsoft Excel Level 1: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Room 320 of Plaster Hall. Participants will learn how to build, format, save and print Excel workbooks. The cost is $119. Details: 417-625-3128.

Joel Ward – Magician: 7 p.m., Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. Ward has been practicing magic since the age of 6 and has been featured on “Lance Burton-Young Magicians Showcase,” filmed at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Presented by the Campus Activities Board.


Wellness Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center. Students can make body scrubs.

Wax Candles: 10:30 a.m., Lion’s Den. Students can create their own wax candle from one of nine colors, while supplies last.

Health Hut: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lion’s Den. The Wellness Department will offer free giveaways during the weekly event.

Career Services Walk-In Workshop: 12 to 3 p.m., Career Services Office, second floor of Spiva Library. Stop by the workshop for career and resume advice, assistance creating or editing your resume, assistance researching careers, information on job shadowing and internships or resume printing. All services and printing are available free of charge; no appointment is needed.

“Hairspray”: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre, Billingsly Student Center. The 2007 musical film follows an overweight high-school student overcoming adversity through dance. Presented by the Wellness program; admission is free.


Judge Jimmy Edwards —“Implicit Bias and At-Risk Students“: 2 p.m., Corley Auditorium. Judge Edwards, founder of the Innovative Concept Academy in St. Louis, will discuss learning styles and how students’ backgrounds affect their learning.
