Joplin, MO (SNS) – More than 600 area high-school students will compete for scholarships and other prizes during the 37th annual Business Contest on Wednesday, April 1, at Missouri Southern State University.

Sponsored by the Robert W. Plaster School of Business, students from more than 25 high schools in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas will compete in individual and team events that include written tests, performances and use of computer software programs. Categories include accounting, business communication, general business, business math, personal finance, free enterprise, banking and financial systems, marketing, multimedia and website development.

The 2015 event marks the second year that performance events have been offered as part of the contest.

“We were very pleased with the successful implementation of the performance events in 2014. It was a modernization of our contest and gave the students the opportunity to display a wide variety of talents including verbal and interpersonal skills,” said Megan Douglas, professor of management and contest coordinator.

“In addition to the awards that include certificates, plaques, gift cards and scholarships, the Business Contest is a great opportunity for high-school students to compete against one another on their knowledge of business and business concepts. The contest is also an opportunity for them to visit our campus and learn about the many academic offerings in the Robert W. Plaster School of Business. Our faculty members enjoy the opportunity to meet and interact with possible future students.”

Admissions staff and several student organizations will also be available to provide information and answer questions for the students during the contest.

First-place winners in each event will receive a $450 scholarship, and all students are eligible to enter into a drawing for a tablet.

Testing begins at 9 a.m.  The awards ceremony, which will be held at 1 p.m. in Taylor Performing Arts Center, is open to the public.
