Joplin, MO (SNS) – From the opening of a senior art exhibition to a series of concerts and recitals, the artistic talents of students at Missouri Southern State University will take center stage next week.

A variety of other activities are also planned, from the annual Spring Picnic to screenings of “The Wedding Ringer.”


Senior Exhibition: Spiva Art Gallery. A group of MSSU senior art majors will showcase their original works through a variety of creative mediums. The exhibition runs through April 24. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

MSSU Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Band Concert: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. The MSSU Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Rick Espinosa, will perform works from the baroque, classical and romantic periods as well as 20th century contemporary music. The event is free and open to the public.


Junior Recital: 5 p.m., Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. Junior instrumental majors Gordon Blodgett (saxophone) and Tyler Jones (trumpet) will present a combined recital. Free and open to the public.

Baseball vs. Emporia: 6 p.m., new stadium.

MSSU Percussion Ensemble Concert: 7:30 p.m., Bud Walton Theatre. The MSSU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Brian Fronzaglia, will present their spring concert. Free and open to the public.


Wellness Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lion’s Den in Billingsly Student Center.

Customer Retention via Social Media: 2 to 4:30 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. Eric Spellman – owner and president of Spellmann & Associates, will discuss the current social media environment, the demographic migrations taking place and how business owners can take advantage of these facts. How to Rank Well on Google: 5:30 to 8 p.m., Cornell Auditorium. Eric Spellmann will explain how Google evaluates websites and how businesses can take advantage of that process. Cost is $49. Details: 417-625-3128.

Academic Achievement Recognition Ceremony: 7 to 8 p.m., Corley Auditorium. Awards will be presented to outstanding graduates by their respective departments.


Roger Wright, Piano Master Class: 10 to 11 a.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. Guest artist Roger Wright will present a piano master class. The event is free and open to the public.

Health Hut: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lion’s Den. The Wellness Department will offer free giveaways during the weekly event. 

Career Services Walk-In Workshop: 12 to 2 p.m., Career Services Office, second floor of Spiva Library. Stop by the workshop for career and resume advice, assistance creating or editing your resume, assistance researching careers, information on job shadowing and internships or resume printing. All services and printing are available free of charge; no appointment is needed.

Grocery Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lion’s Den. Students can win a bag of free groceries courtesy of the Missouri Southern Campus Activities Board. Only students are allowed to play.

“The Wedding Ringer”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre in Billingsly Student Center. A husband-to-be has no best man for his wedding, so he hires one. Rated R. Presented by the Campus Activities Board, candy and drinks will be provided. Free.

MSSU Jazz Orchestra Concert: 7:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium. The MSSU Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Phillip C. Wise and Freddie Green, will present their Spring Concert. The event is free and open to the public.

36th Annual Spring Picnic: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Campus Oval.

The Southern Symphony Orchestra with guest pianist Roger Wright: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. The Southern Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Jeff Macomber and featuring the return engagement of guest artist Roger Wright, will present a concert. Free and open to the public.


Senior Exhibition Reception: 12 to 2 p.m., Spiva Art Gallery. The artists will be on hand to discuss their works with interested viewers. 

Softball vs. Northeastern State: 1 p.m., Lea Kungle Field.


Softball vs. Central Oklahoma: 1 p.m., Lea Kungle Field.

Suzuki Academy Student Recitals: 1:30 and 3 p.m., Corley Auditorium. The Suzuki Violin Academy, under the direction of Rebecca Cutler, will present two student recitals. Free and open to the public.
