Joplin, MO (SNS) – Three students from South Middle School were recognized as finalists for their entry into the National History Day competition, held earlier this month at the University of Maryland-College Park.
Destiny George, Autumn Achey and Hannah Crouch were named finalists in the Junior Group Exhibit category for their entry, “Irena Sendler: Leading Zegota and Leaving and Inspiring Legacy.” The students qualified for the national competition after taking second place at the Missouri Region 6 History Day, held in March at Missouri Southern State University, and at the state competition on April 2 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Their teacher is Ivan Obert.
Jay Mehta, a student at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, received a gold medal for his entry in the Junior Individual Performance Category. Other finalists and award winners included students from Essex, Columbia and Weston.

The theme for the 2015 History Day contest was “Leadership and Legacy in History.” Entries from area high schools, junior highs, middle schools and home schools included research papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and websites. Students in grades six through eight competed in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 in the Senior Division.
The 2016 Region 6 contest will be held Friday, March 11, at Missouri Southern. The theme will be “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.”
