Joplin, MO (SNS) – New students and their families will be welcomed to Missouri Southern State University during the First-Year Student Convocation ceremony, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Taylor Performing Arts Center.

The ceremony is designed to introduce students to campus traditions and learn more about Missouri Southern, said Teresa Thompson, director of the First-Year Experience program.

“They’ll meet Dr. Alan Marble, the president of MSSU, and the president and vice president of Student Senate,” said Thompson. “The Alma Mater will be performed, and students will receive a medallion that they can keep through their college journey and receive a lanyard so they can wear it at graduation.”

Following the ceremony, there will be a class photo and all participants will receive a T-shirt.

Another long-standing tradition at Missouri Southern is also planned for that evening.

Campus Craze will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Oval. Representatives from a variety of campus organizations will be on hand to offer information to students. Jack’s Ice Cream will be on hand to offer cool treats throughout the event.

Classes are scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 17.
