Joplin, MO (SNS) – The Southern Symphony Orchestra will present “La Musica Espanola” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

Under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, the orchestra will be joined by classical guitarist Robert Gruca as they spotlight the music of Spain. The program will feature Manuel de Falla’s concert suite from “El Armor Brujo,” Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concerto de Aranjuez” for guitar and orchestra, and Bizet’s “Carmen Symphony.”

Gruca has toured the United States and Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra and has earned several prizes in national guitar competitions. He teaches at the Cleveland Music School Settlement and started the first Suzuki guitar program in northeast Ohio in 2013.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Other campus events planned next week include a day for December graduates to prepare for commencement, a personal presentation about flamenco dancing and screenings of the film “Pixels.”

Tuesday, Nov. 3

“The Sea Inside”: 7 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. Javier Bardem stars a Ramon Sampredo, a Spaniard who fought a 30-year campaign for the right to end his life with dignity. Rated PG-13.

Wednesday, Nov. 4

Grad Expo: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Ralph L. Gray Alumni Center. A variety of departments and vendors will be available to help seniors prepare for the upcoming commencement ceremonies.

Thursday, Nov. 5

National Doughnut Day: 8 a.m., Lion’s Den. Come celebrate and enjoy a doughnut, while supplies last.

“Discovering ‘Duende’ – Flamenco: 11 a.m., Phelps Theatre in Billingsly Student Center. Dr. Joy Dworkin, chair of the English and Philosophy Department will offer a personal presentation about her connection with flamenco dancing.

“Pixels”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. Former video-game champs must save the world when aliens take the form of arcade characters and attack Earth. Rated PG-13.

Friday, Nov. 6
