The annual World Music & Cuisine Festival will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom.

International students, faculty and staff will prepare their native dishes, while a variety of musical groups perform. Food portions will be sold for $1 each.

“The World Music & Cuisine Festival has quickly become one of the signature events at Missouri Southern,” said Dr. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies. “Most people like to sample exciting, new foods and hear music that they may be unaccustomed to. It’s a great combination of satisfying your palate and expanding your musical repertoire at the same time.”

The entertainment will be provided by Kufara, an African marimba band, at 5 p.m.; Mariachi Amistad, a Mexican mariachi band, at 5:45 p.m.; Saudi Ardah, a dance by students from Saudi Arabia, at 6:45 p.m.; and the German polka band Mach Schnell Blaskapelle at 7 p.m.

Food selections will include offerings from Festival Mexican Restaurant and Roswitha’s Schnitzelbank, as well as dishes prepared by more than two dozen students and faculty members.

“Our international students and faculty like to bring exposure to their cultures, and one way they can do this is by showcasing some of the wonderful food from their countries,” said Stebbins. “For example, one of our students from South Korea is going to prepare the delicious Bulgogi barbecue, and our contingent from the British Virgin Islands will fix their national dish — fungi and fish.”

Presented by The Joplin Globe and the MSSU International Club, the World Music & Cuisine Festival is a fundraiser for the university’s international students. Emcees will be Volodymyr Dukov, a student from Ukraine, and Inge Logtenberg, from the Netherlands.
