Joplin, MO (SNS) – The Southern Jazz Orchestra will present its “Swing in Spring” concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in Corley Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

The concert will feature guest trombonist, Dr. Phillip C. Wise, as well as vocalist Erin Marston.

Wise, an accomplished trombonist, is a professor music at Missouri Southern. He currently performs regularly with his jazz quartet and coaches the university jazz combos. Marston is a sophomore music major from Carthage.

The jazz orchestra is under the direction of Freddie Green. Selections will include “Magic Flea,” “Caravan,” “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” “Beautiful Love” and “Route 66.” Admission is free and open to the public.

Other events on campus next week will include the 2016 Missouri Southern Student Research Fair, a performance by the Southern Symphony Orchestra and the annual Spring Picnic.

Monday, April 25

Senior tuba recital: 8:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. Alex Mauser, an instrumental music major, will present the recital.

Tuesday, April 26

Spirit Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lions Den. Students can play Bingo for a chance to win prizes courtesy of the Campus Activities Board.

Introduction to QuickBooks: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Room 320 of Plaster Hall. Participants will get an in-depth look at how to use the desktop version of QuickBook for Windows. The two-day training will continue on Thursday, April 28. Cost is $124 per person. Details: 417-625-3128.

Wednesday, April 27

Comedian Ryan Conner: 7 p.m. in Corley Auditorium. Conner, a finalist on the 2015 season of “Last Comic Standing” has served as writer for “Ridiculousness,” “Billy on the Street” and the “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live.”

Thursday, April 28

Missouri Southern Student Research Fair: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Conner Ballroom in Billingsly Student Center. More than two dozen students have entered this year’s competition.

“Zoolander 2”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theater in Billingsly Student Center.

Southern Symphony Orchestra concert: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. Robin Sisk, visiting professor of music, will join the orchestra as a tuba soloist during the performance.

Friday, April 29

Spring Picnic: 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., campus Oval. The campus is invited to attend the 37th annual picnic.

“Zoolander 2”: 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theater.

Saturday, Arpil 30

Super Leaders Induction Ceremony: 2 p.m., Conner Ballroom in BSC. Students who participated in the program will be inducted into the Young Professionals Network.
