For the most part, “Dawson is back to being Dawson,” says his mother, Alicia Hughes.

Seven-year-old Dawson Hirshey sustained a serious head injury after being struck in the head by a foul ball during a Missouri Southern baseball game at Joe Becker Stadium.

“He’s doing really well, and has entered the rehab phase of his treatment,” says Hughes, Missouri Southern’s bursar. “His spirits are high and he’s smiling and happy most days. There are lots of hugs and kisses.”

He was transported to a Joplin hospital shortly after the accident on April 13, and then to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for surgery. Doctors have told the family that Dawson will likely need to stay at the hospital for another month.

“His left leg doesn’t want to work properly,” says Hughes. “It will probably be years before he gets everything functioning back the way that it should.”

She says the support she has received from her co-workers at Missouri Southern has been “phenomenal.”

“We’ve received so many cards, donations, messages and texts … we can feel the love, for sure,” says Hughes. “I just really want to thank everyone there, and we can’t wait to come back and see everybody.”

She continues to update her son’s progress daily on the “Prayers 4 Dawson” Facebook page. A GoFundMe page to raise money for the family’s expenses is still active.
