Two retiring instructors have been selected to carry the ceremonial mace during Spring 2018 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12.

“It’s an honorific opportunity to lead the procession,” said Dr. Paula Carson, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “We recognize two eminent retirees for their many years of dedication and service to the university.”

Selected for the honor this year were Marty Conklin, an associate professor of kinesiology, and Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, professor of music.

“It’s very meaningful, and I appreciate the honor of being able to participate,” said Macomber, who is retiring after 15 years at Missouri Southern.

Macomber said he will continue to appreciate the accomplishments of the Music Department “from afar,” when he soon relocates to St. Paul, Minn.

Conklin also said he was honored by the selection, especially since he was asked last year but had to decline due to a family illness.

Having been with Missouri Southern since 1998, he said he looks forward to seeing what the future holds as he enters retirement along with his wife, who is also a teacher.

“We’ve both been ‘all in’ about teaching,” said Conklin. “All we’ve done is work and raise kids, so retirement will be a time to focus on us.”
