Missouri Southern is welcoming new talent to its public relations and marketing team. Mike Olmstead, news anchor and executive producer of FOX 14 News at 9, will join the university as Director of News Services and Messaging on July 1.

Olmstead, who has been the face of the regional nightly newscast for the past seven years, will step into this new role at MSSU with an expertise in video storytelling as well as message organization and strategy.

“Mike is stepping into a very important role for the university, which focuses on bringing new approaches to our online and traditional communication projects,” said Cassie Mathes, director of University Relations and Marketing at Missouri Southern. “He is well-known in the area for his television presence and personable delivery style, but he is also a very experienced communicator with a love for MSSU. We’re looking forward to bringing in Mike’s leadership to continue to bolster our communications with our alumni, students and community.”

The new role, which was created following a departmental restructure, will enable the university to tell more stories about the successes of its alumni, faculty and students in video and livestream formats, as well as through the online version of MSSU’s award-winning university magazine, Crossroads.

Olmstead, who won the Missouri Broadcasters Association’s “Best News Anchor” award in 2015, has had a long history in broadcast journalism. He moved to Missouri in 1996 when he accepted a reporter position with KSNF-TV. He also gained public relations experience while working for the Tulsa 66ers from 2006-07.

“I could not be more excited to become a member of the MSSU family,” said Olmstead. “This university has held a special place in my heart since I first started covering athletics on campus more than 20 years ago. I’m honored to be able to join such a dynamic team and help them continue to build on this institution’s outstanding tradition.”
