Missouri Southern State University faculty and staff have the opportunity to make our campus a more safe and welcoming environment for members of the LGBT+ community during a Safe Zone training event scheduled for 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Room 341 of Billingsly Student Center.
Subjects covered will include current and proper vocabulary, gender and sexual identity, coming out and creating inclusive spaces.
“This is something that faculty and staff are very interested in and want to know more about,” said Kayla Reed, access services librarian and interim committee chair. “Nobody wants to make students feel unwelcome and we have limited opportunities to receive training and then actually interact with students, so this makes a huge difference.
“We’d like to emphasize that they won’t just be reading about something. They’ll get to see how it affects people. It’s more of an interaction than a training.”
