Winners have been announced for the annual Region 6 History Day competition. Hosted by the Social Sciences Department at Missouri Southern State University, the event was held virtually this year.
The theme for this year’s event was “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” Students in grades six through eight competed in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 in the Senior Division.
Entries were received from 140 students in five area school districts, said Dr. Bill Fischer, assistant professor of history at Missouri Southern. Participating schools included North Middle School, South Middle School, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School and McAuley Catholic High School in Joplin; Carl Junction High School and Carl Junction Junior High; Neosho Middle School and Neosho High School; Nevada Middle School and Nevada High School.
The entries – which included papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and websites – were reviewed by a panel of judges from the campus and community.
The top winners in each category will advance to the state contest at the University of Missouri in Columbia. From there, winners can go on to the National History Day Contest held in College Park, Md., in June.
