Dallas Fortner, a longtime member of Missouri Southern’s campus security force, passed away on June 26.

He worked for many years at the BF Goodrich plant in Miami, Okla., before joining campus security, where he worked for 20 years until he retired in February 2008.

“He was a fun-loving gentleman with a good heart,” says Ken Kennedy, chief of the University Police Department. “You could count on him for a joke for funny story almost every day.”

Fortner was on duty during the early morning hours of Nov. 22, 1990. While making his rounds, he was the first to notice something was amiss at the Barn Theatre – a historic campus building dating back to its Mission Hills farm days. The structure was later converted into a 144-seat theater.

In the Dec. 11 issue of The Chart that year, Fortner said he was near Young Gymnasium when he spied smoke coming from the roof of the Barn Theatre. Firefighters soon arrived on scene, but the structure sustained massive damage.

Services were held on July 12 in Seneca. Obituary information can be found here.
