A memorial service for Dr. Otto Borchert, assistant professor of Computer Information Science, is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

Borchert, who passed away on Wednesday, joined the faculty at Missouri Southern in 2018. In 2021, he received the Outstanding Teacher Award presented by Academic Affairs.

He was the recipient of numerous awards and was a frequent presenter at conferences. He authored several academic papers as well as a textbook. An active member of campus governance, he also served as advisor to the Computer Information Science Club.

“Dr. Borchert was a wonderful educator who was highly respected by his students and colleagues,” said Dr. Dean Van Galen, president of Missouri Southern. “He was a kind and engaged leader on our campus, universally respected, who leaves a tremendous legacy at our university.”

Dr. Jeff Zimmerman, dean of the Robert W. Plaster College of Business, said Borchert was “fully engaged” with campus since the day he became a faculty member.

“His can-do attitude, smiling face and gentle persona will be sadly missed by all of us but particularly by his students, to whom he gave so much and valued most of all,” Zimmerman said.

The service in Corley Auditorium will be followed by a visitation.

In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to the university, the St. Paul’s Newman Center in Fargo, N.D., or the American Kidney Foundation.
